to the fact that the susceptible element has been to a great extent affected, leaving a considerable number of insusceptible persons; but sotive migration of the population usually occurs inte the Colony, thus bringing a new susceptible element in contact with the great number of carriers. Carriers in great number are undoubtedly developed as a result of an extensive epidemic, and, under adverse conditions, as overcrowding, the advent of new elements of the population may result in another outbreak.

(a) The great distangs of the Colony from the sources of

its supply of reliable serum adda another factor in favour of sim

production of serum locally.

On these bases, the report was submitted to the Govern- ment advising the preparation of antimaningcococic serum in the Colony.

In order that a supply of a potent serum be on hand until the horses at Hongkong are sufficiently immunised the

Rockefeller Institute for Medical Researali has presented to the

Government 625 doses of antimeningococcia sorus, which I have

brought with me. and 500 doses which were shipped subsequently,

making a total of 1128 denes.

In testing the Flexner serum with all the cultures of

meningococci which are on hand at the Bacteriological Institute

it was found that of 59 cultures, the serum agglutinated 54.

The Government having subsequently agreed to produce sar

locally, four horses were started in an attempt to have them

yield serum approaching as pearly as possible this standard.

It is believed that the yield from these horses will be

adequate to the needs of the Colony.

2. Treatment of the Patient.

The marked swoosss of specific treatment of spidemio
